adsense ontology
Google AdSense is a pay-per-click (PPC) program that can give you advertising revenue from each page on your website with a minimal investment in time and no additional resources.

AdSense delivers relevant ads that are targeted to the content people find on your site.

In many advertising networks and websites, including AdSense, the advertiser is charged for advertising their ad only when a user clicks on their ad. How much they pay (for that click) is called their Cost Per Click or CPC.

Here you will find some simple and effective AdSense tips that will increase your revenue. If you haven't already joined AdSense program, you should sign up first.

Now it's time to show you some tips and tricks that will optimize your AdSense ads.

Top 15 AdSense tips

AdSense Tip #1: Find your keywords

Before serving ads on a web page, check its keyword density. A free and advanced tool for finding the most prominent keywords in a page can be found here: SEO Density Analyzer. Copy the most important keywords to a text file ([web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt).

AdSense Tip #2: Improve your keywords

Get keyword suggestions from Overture Search Inventory and from Google AdWords Sandbox. Get new keywords that can help you improve your ad relevance. Enter the keywords from [web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt and save the suggestions to [web page name]-adsense-suggestions.txt.

AdSense Tip #3: Keep your website focused on a theme

Use the keyword suggestions to enhance your web pages and to build theme-based content. And also try to get your keywords into the anchor text of your incoming links as much as possible. Don't forget that Google AdSense is keyword-targeted advertising: Google AdSense bases its advert topics on your websites content, this means that content-rich websites of a popular topic should attract a large amount of ads.

AdSense Tip #4: Write a new page every day

One of the best tips is to add a new page to your web site every day. The more content you have, the more visitors you will get. Put an Adsense unit on each and every content page of your site. But where? You will find more about that from the next AdSense tips.

AdSense Tip #5: Choose the right AdSense format

Wider formats are successful because the ads are compact, easy to read and are complementary to the content. The top three AdSense formats are:
  1. 336x280 large rectangle
  2. 300x250 medium rectangle
  3. 160x600 wide skyscraper

Another successful format is the 468x15 horizontal ad links, that can be placed under your navigation bar.

Virtual Piano

Play Along with Our Virtual Piano!

Requires the free Shockwave 8 plugin

Almost everyone has heard the song Mary Had A Little Lamb. The notes you sing are the melody. Jazz musicians are artists who use melody as a foundation to create new works of music.

With our Virtual Piano, you will learn how the same melody can sound fresh and new when played with a different rhythm, a different instrumentation, or a free-spirited combination of the two called improvisation.

Open the Virtual Piano
Open the Virtual Piano
Virtual Piano Instructions

When the Virtual Piano opens, click on "Watch and Learn" to hear Mary Had a Little Lamb played as a normal melody. As the melody plays, watch the notes on the musical staff just above the keyboard. These written notes tell the musicians what notes to play on their instruments.

In the Normal Melody mode, you will notice that there are a relatively small number of notes on the musical staff, mixed with occasional rests — the small squiggly lines — which tell the musicians when to be silent.

When you're ready, click "Play Along" to test your musical skills. You can either click directly on the piano keys with your mouse, or click the corresponding letters on your keyboard's middle row. The goal is to match the melody as it plays in the background.

Syncopation Melody

Imagine a loudly ticking clock. The normal melody notes of Mary Had a Little Lamb match the ticking of the clock exactly. Syncopation, however, means playing those same notes either just before or just after the tick — in other words, "off the beat."

As you look at the notes on the musical staff, notice how there are a few more notes and a few more rests. The melody is getting more exciting — but you can tell by listening that it's still the same song.

Slurs and Bent Notes Melody

When musicians rapidly combine two or more notes, sliding smoothly between them, they are said to be "bending" or "slurring" the notes. This is sometimes called playing a "grace note."

Musicians use slurs and bent notes to convey a feeling or emotion. Even though the notes of the melody now look radically different on the musical staff, you should still be able to hear the familiar tune.

Improvisation Melody

Improvisation is when musicians use slurs, bent notes and syncopation in order to recreate the melody in new and interesting ways. Just as no two artists would paint the same scene the same way, no two musicians improvise a melody in the same way.

You can see from the notes on the musical staff that some are normal, some are slurred, and some are syncopated. Skillful jazz musicians are able to combine all of these techniques to create new works of art right off the top of their head. This new creation is inspired by the original melody, but it represents the personality and feelings of the musician.

How to grow Strawberries

Everybody loves strawberries! These delicious and aromatic fruits are a quintessential summer treat. Why settle for expensive supermarket strawberries when they’re so easy to grow at home? Happy both on the vegetable plot and on the patio, try growing strawberries in hanging baskets, containers, and even window boxes! Grow your own strawberries today and discover the flavour of warm sun-ripened fruit picked fresh from your own garden.

Which strawberry should I grow?

  • There are three main types of strawberry plant - alpine (wild strawberries), ‘summer-fruiting’ or ‘perpetual-fruiting’.
  • • Alpine strawberries such as ‘Mignonette’produce lots of very small and sweet berries from July-September.
  • • Summer-fruiting strawberries such as ‘Cambridge Favourite' produce a heavy flush of larger fruits in early and mid-summer.
  • • Perpetual-fruiting strawberries (or ‘ever-bearing strawberries’) such as ‘Finesse’ produce fruit in small flushes from early summer to early autumn.

Where to plant strawberries

Strawberries are best planted in the spring or autumn. They prefer a sunny and sheltered position in fertile, free-draining soil. Improve your soil with lots of organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure prior to growing strawberry plants. Strawberries can be grown in semi-shade - in fact alpine strawberries prefer this! However, summer-fruiting and perpetual-fruiting strawberries may not crop as prolifically in the shade as those grown in full sun.

Planting strawberries

When planting your strawberries give them plenty of space for better cropping and easy access. For growing in the ground, plant strawberries 45cm (18") apart and in rows spaced 75cm (30") apart. Use a trowel to dig a hole big enough to accommodate the roots of the plant. If planting strawberry runners spread the roots out in the hole and make sure the crown of the plant is resting at soil level. Pot-grown plants should be planted so the top of the compost is level with the soil surface. Planting too deeply can cause the strawberry plants to rot, and planting with the crown too high above the soil surface can cause the plants to dry out and die. Firm the plants in well and water thoroughly.

How to grow strawberries in hanging baskets and containers

Strawberries are well-suited to baskets, containers and patio planters and are ideal for those with limited space. This also keeps them safely away from slugs, snails and small animals who enjoy the fruits as much as we do! Why not grow strawberries in our Stackapot or a Flowerpouch® for an attractive, space-saving container display on the patio.
For a 12" hanging basket it’s best to only grow three or four strawberry plants so they don’t compete too much for light, nutrients and water, which will ultimately reduce cropping. Incorporate some water-retaining granules and slow-release strawberry fertiliser into the compost before planting. Check the compost daily in hot weather and water if the top half-inch of compost feels dry. For more information about planting hanging baskets click here.

Feed, water and harvest!

  • • For really bumper crops of juicy strawberries, feed and water your plants regularly throughout the spring and summer. Well-manured soils should be fertile enough for good cropping. If your soil is poor then a slow-release fertiliser can be worked in to the soil surface in the spring.
  • • Water frequently whilst new plants establish and during dry periods.
  • • If growing strawberries in pots or hanging baskets feed them every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. When flowering begins, switch to a high-potash liquid fertiliser to encourage good fruiting.
  • • As the fruits develop, place dry straw or mulching fabric underneath to prevent soil splash on the fruits, which causes blemishes to the fruit.
  • • It’s also worth netting your strawberries before they turn red as the birds will make a quick meal of them! A net tunnel can be easily installed.
  • • Some varieties of strawberry produce ‘runners’ which are trailing stems with young strawberry plants along the length. These should be removed from early summer onwards (the plant will produce runners all summer) to help direct energy into flowering and fruiting, and reduce competition for light and nutrients.

Strawberry aftercare

After cropping, remove any straw and netting to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. As the summer progresses, keep on top of weeding and continue to remove any runners. Clear away dead foliage as this can harbour pests and diseases over winter. Each spring spread a general purpose slow-release fertiliser around your plants along with a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost.

Strawberry crop rotation

Strawberry plants tend to lose vigour after about three years; harvests become smaller and the plants succumb to pests and diseases. It is best to replace plants after their third year of cropping. If space allows then rotate your strawberry beds every three years to a different part of the garden to prevent pests and diseases building up in the soil.

Growing strawberries from seed

Although strawberries are normally bought as plants, you can also try growing strawberries from seed. Seeds take up to a month to germinate and will usually crop the following year. The advantages of growing from seed are the unusual varieties that aren’t available as plants, such as ‘Florian’; which has pink flowers and produces fruit both on the parent plant and the runners, making it ideal for a hanging basket.

Growing strawberries indoors

Growing strawberries in a greenhouse or conservatory can produce fruit up to a month earlier than usual. (If you don't have a greenhouse or polytunnel then placing a cloche over your outdoor strawberry plants in February will also advance ripening by about three weeks.) For growing strawberries indoors it’s best to plant each strawberry plant into a 15cm (6") pot of general multipurpose compost.
Strawberry plants need to be left outside for the autumn and winter as they require a chill period to initiate flowering. From February you can bring the plants indoors to a bright position and water as needed. Take care not to let the temperature rise above 16C as this will inhibit flowering. You’ll also need to pollinate the flowers by hand. To do this, lightly brush a soft paint brush around the central yellow part of each of the flowers. Remember to feed your plants with a balanced fertiliser every two weeks until flowering begins, at which point you should switch to a high-potash liquid fertiliser for the best fruiting.

Beard Champion Jack Passion on Growing a Healthy Beard Fast

Whether you’re gearing up for Movember, preparing to be Gandalf for Halloween, or just testing the limits of your own physiology, it pays to know how to grow a beard in a hurry. Two-time World Beard and Mustache Champion Jack Passion knows how to do this better than anyone. We tapped him for some tips on growing a healthy beard as quickly as possible.
Don’t be fooled by his appearance: Jack Passion is a far cry from your run-of-the-mill urban woodsman. This guy has some serious facial hair-growing cred. The author of “The Facial Hair Handbook” and and star of IFC’s Whisker Wars won first prize for his beard at the 2007 and 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships. He’s also one of the most prominent subjects of Morgan Spurlock’s recent documentary, “Mansome.”
What we admire about Passion (in addition to “Big Red,” as he affectionately refers to his beard) is how he champions the beard as an earnest and natural expression of masculinity and health in an age when it seems facial hair is under constant siege by the forces of irony. In our hour-long conversation, the self-proclaimed “advocate for men finding and being themselves through something as simple as facial hair,” transitioned smoothly from abstract concepts to the brass tacks of cultivating a championship beard. Here’s how he frames the task: “You have to optimize both offense and defense,” he says. “You grow great facial hair and then you take care of it. The bad news is that for every man there exists a maximum genetic growth rate. The good news is that no one is at his potential.” Here are Passion’s tips for growing a healthy and lustrous beard in a hurry.

Focus on Health

“In cave man days, hair was a sign that you were nutritionally up to par, that you had shelter, were sleeping. If you were healthy on the inside, then you could grow nice hair. If you optimize your health, then you’ll grow great beard hair.”

Take Your Vitamins

“I used to take B complex vitamins and a few others, but that was like six or seven vitamins a day. It was expensive and time consuming. Now I take two VitaBeard with breakfast. It is a wonder drug. There was a time in body building when they started taking steroids. And the sport was changed. I feel that VitaBeard has changed competitive facial hair growing.”

Put Your Beard on a Diet

“Hair, even though it’s dead, it’s basically protein wrapped in fat. It’s like little bacon-wrapped hot dogs. So lots of protein is very important. Lots of fat is very important. In terms of reaching your maximum potential, you need healthy testosterone levels, and those are aided by saturated fat. Eggs and animal fat are great, as long as they’re grass fed or organic. On other end, sugar, or anything that behaves like it, grows very weak hair.”

Exercise like a ‘Savage Beast’

“I like squats because they are a full body exercise. Squats basically make testosterone. It’s the savage beast exercise. Cardio is very important too. All of the vitamins you’re taking and food and protein—they get to your hair and skin and face through your blood, so you need good circulation. The times when I’ve been lifting weights and trail running are the times when I’ve basically been a beard-growing machine.”

Hit the Sack

“If you lift weights and you are trying to build muscle, that muscle is built while you’re asleep. Sleep is a time of regeneration and generation. When I was in college, my beard always grew faster during summer, and I think that’s because I was sleeping better, and sleeping more.”

Shampoo and Protect

As for facial hair care—that’s the defensive part of this game. Your hair is naturally designed to protect itself with fat oil coating. If I’m going to be out in the wind on a sailboat or in a pool that is chlorinated, I’ll put in a lightweight oil like jojoba or grape seed oil, to supplement my natural oils. I shampoo most days with a small amount of very weak shampoo. I recommend Grandpa’s Pine Tar Soap.”

Gear Up for Competition

“I want to arrive at a beard competition and walk around as if I’ve already won. Preparing for that psychology is what I do. And I do that by looking good and feeling good. I think that’s why we groom in the first place.”

Our Most Popular Vegetables

A hand squeezes a cabbage head to determine if it’s ready to harvest.
Cabbage
Cabbage is a cool-season vegetable suited to both spring and fall. The trick to growing cabbage is steady, uninterrupted growth. That means rich soil, plenty of water, and good fertilization.
A cucumber fruit hangs from a vine attached to a small trellis
Cucumbers
Cucumber plants grow in two forms: vining and bush. Vines scramble along the ground or clamber up trellises, while bush types, such as Burpless Bush Hybrid, form a more compact plant.
Ichiban eggplant harvested with tomatoes and zinnia flowers
Eggplant
Eggplant loves warmth and grows best in very sunny, well-drained locations. Raised beds that have been generously enriched with composted manure are ideal. Eggplant needs fertile soil.
Regularly apply fertilizer to plants that produce leafy growth that you eat, such as lettuce and greens.
Lettuce
Lettuce is so easy, takes up little space, and can even be grown among flowers. It grows for many weeks in the mild weather of spring and fall. Leaf lettuce is perfect for containers.
Onions are lovely when just pulled from the garden.
Onions
If you can poke a hole into the ground, you can grow an onion from a little plant. Onion starts are little seedlings sold in bare-root bundles; each plant will start growing within days after you plant.
Grow several varieties of peppers.
Peppers
Peppers are easy to grow in any sunny, well-drained spot, and they grow well in roomy containers, too. Plant an assortment of varieties, including a range of flavors, heat levels, and fruit sizes.
Squash has male and female flowers. Female flowers become fruit when pollinated by bees with pollen from male flowers.
Squash
Start with assorted varieties and you can fearlessly grow many, many squash in a surprisingly small space. Learn how squash plants grow and how to identify certain problems in the garden.
Homegrown strawberries are sweeter and more tender than store-bought strawberries.
Strawberries
Success with strawberries asks that you understand their life cycle. Like most hardy perennials, strawberries die back in winter and start growing vigorously as the soil warms in spring.
We offer more than 50 varieties of tomatoes, both heirloom and hybrids. These are heirlooms.
Tomatoes
Sun-ripened tomatoes deliver the taste of summer in every bite. Just a few healthy plants will produce buckets of fruit. Tomatoes run on warmth. Plant in late spring and early summer.

Grow Our Most Popular Herbs

assorted basil leaves in many varieties, colors, shapes, and sizes
Basil
Basil is a warm-weather annual that grows very fast. Many gardeners mix various types of basil in their flowerbeds for a quick harvest anytime. Basil is also great for containers.
Cilantro grows best in cool weather, especially fall.
Cilantro
Cilantro needs its own space in the garden where you can harvest and then let it go to seed in summer. It grows fast in the cool weather of spring and fall, creating a rosette of lacy leaves.
Onion chives make a beautiful border for a garden or pathway
